Two cleft surgical mission in Calamianes was sponsored by Smile Train Philippines. It’s a pilot project to hold cleft surgeries in Culion Sanitarium & General Hospital (CSGH).  All four island (Culion, Coron, Busuanga, Caluit & several other islets) community leaders in Palawan were involved in the finding and sending of patients. MDF staff brought a team of plastic surgeons and pedia anesthesiologist led by Dr. BG Alcantara, Member MDF Medical Advisory Board and President of PAPRAS (Phil. Assoc. of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons).

23 patients who signed up were successfully operated on. LDS Charities – Elder & Sister Stroud were invited to join the activity. There presence helped strengthened CSGH through their medical equipment provision program in addition to MDF’s Equipment Program.


In addition, Oddie Sto. Domingo- orthotist, came to help provide 14 below-the-knee amputee patients with their new prosthetic legs.  Melanie Marquez, an international beauty queen, an actress, and a member of the MDF board of trustees helped in event.

An eye surgical mission in partnership with Fatima University Hospital and Medical Center (FUMC) led by Dr. Jan Sayco and with the blessing of PAO (Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology) was also done to serve these islands in the 2nd half of 2017. Kim Morrison, MDF board of Trustees President and her daughter,  Mattie cheered up the patients and kept them busy while waiting for their awaited surgery. A total of 35 patients received their life-changing surgeries.

The outreach activities was upon the request of Dr. Cunanan, medical chief of CSGH and with the support of local leaders and doctors in the Calamianes Islands.
